A-Level Biology asks you to recall a large volume of precise terminology, and mark schemes reward exact wording: ‘tissue fluid’ is not the same as ‘plasma’. Flashcards are good for terms, definitions and the steps in processes. They help less with applying ideas to unfamiliar contexts, analysing data, maths and statistics, and extended writing such as the AQA essay.
The boards cover similar biology but organise and examine it differently, and Pearson Edexcel has two separate specifications: Biology A (Salters-Nuffield) and Biology B. Check which your school follows, then use the deck tagged with your board.
The Nextutor A-Level Biology flashcard library has 24 decks and 375 cards across 8 topics, including Cell Biology, Genetics, Ecology and more. Decks are tagged by exam board (AQA, Edexcel and OCR) so you can revise from the version that matches your course.
AQA, both Edexcel specifications and OCR A each set three written papers, all taken at the end of the course.
Paper lengths vary by board, from 1 hour 30 minutes (OCR A Paper 3) to 2 hours 30 minutes (Edexcel Biology B Paper 3).
Ofqual rules say at least 10% of the marks must assess maths skills.
You also need the practical endorsement: at least 12 practical activities, reported separately as Pass or Not Classified. It does not count towards your grade, but practical skills are tested in the written papers too.

Write the answer side of each card in the language a mark scheme uses, and test yourself until you give the full term, not a near miss. Watch for pairs that are easy to mix up, such as transcription and translation.
Turn processes into ordered steps
For sequences such as the light-dependent reaction, the cardiac cycle or a nerve impulse, make one card per stage, then practise saying the whole sequence from memory.
Add ‘apply it’ cards
Recall alone won’t answer questions set in unfamiliar contexts. Add cards that ask why or what would happen, such as what an inhibitor does to the rate of a reaction, then practise on past paper questions.
Use papers, not cards, for data and maths
Cards can hold formulas, the conditions for a statistical test and what a p-value means. Graph reading, calculations and evaluating experiments only improve with past paper practice checked against the mark scheme.
Practise extended writing separately
Cards can store the key points for longer answers, but not how to build a linked argument. If you take AQA, plan and write practice essays against past titles; on every board, practise longer answers under timed conditions.

State three structural differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
Show answer
Prokaryotic cells have no membrane-bound organelles, whereas eukaryotic cells do. Prokaryotic DNA is circular and not associated with histones, while eukaryotic DNA is linear and bound to histones. Prokaryotic cell walls contain murein, whereas plant eukaryotic cell walls contain cellulose.
Genotype is the genetic constitution of an organism, comprising all the alleles it possesses. Phenotype is the observable or biochemical characteristics of an organism, determined by the interaction of its genotype and the environment.
An ecological niche describes how an organism fits into its environment. It includes where the organism lives and what it does there, encompassing all its adaptations and interactions with both biotic and abiotic factors.
Describe the difference between a condensation and a hydrolysis reaction.
Show answer
A condensation reaction joins two molecules together with the formation of a chemical bond and the elimination of a water molecule. A hydrolysis reaction breaks a chemical bond between two molecules and involves the use of a water molecule.
Three written papers with AQA, Edexcel Biology A, Edexcel Biology B and OCR A, all at the end of the course. Lengths and weightings differ by board; see the table above for yours.
Do the exam boards cover the same content?
Much of the core biology overlaps, but the boards organise and examine it differently, and Edexcel has two separate specifications. Use the deck tagged with your board and check against your own specification.
Does the practical endorsement count towards my grade?
No. It is reported separately as Pass or Not Classified, and you need to complete at least 12 practical activities. Practical skills are also tested in the written papers, so revise the methods behind your practicals.
Are these A-Level Biology flashcards free?
Yes — every deck in the Nextutor flashcard library is free. Create a free account to study the full decks and track your progress with spaced repetition.
Which A-Level Biology topics do the flashcards cover?
The library currently covers 8 topics: Cell Biology; Genetics; Ecology; Biochemistry; Immune System and Disease; Photosynthesis and Respiration; Transport in Plants and Animals; Homeostasis and Nervous Control. New decks are added over time.
Which exam boards are the A-Level Biology flashcards for?
Decks are tagged for AQA, Edexcel and OCR. Check the exam board tag against your specification — core content often overlaps between boards.
How many A-Level Biology flashcards are there?
There are 24 decks with 375 cards in total. Each card has a question on the front and the answer on the back.
Can I make my own AI A-Level Biology flashcards?
Yes — once you're signed in you can generate a A-Level Biology flashcard deck on any topic with AI in seconds, or build one card by card. Free accounts get a monthly AI generation quota.
Should I use flashcards or a Biology tutor?
Flashcards are good for memorising key facts, definitions and terms. A A-Level Biology tutor helps with understanding and exam technique, which flashcards alone can't cover — many students use both.
